12 Obvious Reasons Why The Obesity Rate Is Rising

This morning as I was reading the news, I came upon an article that was talking about how the nation’s obesity rates are rising, which of course was no surprise to me. But in the article was a very disturbing sentence that read “Experts said they had no explanation for why the obesity rate appears to be rising.” This really set me off. How can “experts” really have no idea? What are they even experts of then? Because it took me all of about 2 minutes to easily come up with 12 very reasonable ideas as to why the obesity rate is rising, and I’m certainly no expert. It just takes a little common sense. So I decided to write out these 12 reasons, in hopes that maybe some experts will read this and learn a thing or two.
- Our government doesn’t actually have our citizens best interest in mind. They might try to make you think they do, but if they really did, then companies like Coca Cola wouldn’t be able to use their millions of dollars to sway laws in their favor.
- The companies who make the unhealthiest foods have the most money. Red Bull has a two billion dollar annual marketing budget. Broccoli has zero. You will never see a commercial on TV for cooking fresh, whole, local, organic, seasonal vegetables at home, because who would pay for that ad? Instead you will be inundated with ads for unhealthy foods full of sugar and chemicals.
- Most people don’t actually have any idea what makes them fat. Including government scientists, who for years purported that fat and cholesterol in our diets was actually bad for us. If “experts have no explanation for why the obesity rate appears to be rising” then why should we trust government dietary guidelines, clearly they aren’t working.
- Food producers add sugar to damn near everything. There should not be added sugar in my sliced turkey that I buy at the deli counter. And I should not have to pay twice as much for "healthy" turkey that doesn't have sugar added to it.
- Our country’s employment regulations are not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Sitting at a desk for 40 hours a week, with little support or incentive to exercise and eat healthy throughout the day is killing most people.
- The government subsidizes farmers and food companies to make unhealthy food cheaper. That’s why it costs less to buy a Big Mac then it does to buy a bundle of Kale. And if you’re poor, you’re gonna buy what is cheaper.
- 90% of the products in mainstream grocery store chains are actually bad for you in some way. But people assume that because it’s in the store, it must be safe.
- The food in most restaurants, especially chain restaurants, is actually worse for you than the crap food they sell in grocery stores. If you're gonna eat at a restaurant, look for local, independent restaurants that source their ingredients from local farmers and purveyors, and preferably organic. It's not gonna save you from all the bad stuff, but it will be greatly reduced at least.
- To actually live a truly healthy lifestyle, you have to live WAY outside the mainstream, which most people are scared of. Even though it’s actually a wonderful place to be.
- We value the convenience of processed foods above all else. Most of us are overworked and underpaid and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to purchase and prepare healthy, whole foods.
- People don't take time to exercise. This is in large part because their awful jobs chew them up and spit them out every day. But still that should be no excuse. You don't have to be a gym-rat that works out for 2 hours every day to be fit and healthy. I work out for 40 minutes, 5 or 6 times a week. And in that 40 minutes I bust my ass. After a relatively short while you will see very obvious improvements in your health.
- The number one priority of our nation’s industrial food system is to make money. Their goal is not healthy people, it's profit.
So this isn’t intended to be a comprehensive research paper on all of these subjects. It was simply an exercise to see what I could come up with in a very short period of time, literally off the top of my head. These are all very simple ideas that I live by, and know for a fact that I am healthier than most people as a result. It wasn’t something that happened overnight for me. But rather over the course of a few years I would say. The more I questioned things, the more I realized what was wrong, and the more I learned. This post and this post are nice examples of how I shifted my lifestyle to be healthier and happier.
If you are trending towards being obese, I would say that the most important thing to understand is that you need to take your health into your own hands.
There are simply no provisions out there within our mainstream system that will reverse that trend for you. The only thing that has your best interest in mind is you, not the government, not the healthcare system, and certainly not any ads you see on TV. And the only place you will find help is outside of the mainstream system. But once you start looking, there is plenty of help to be found. In the meantime, stay away from sugar, or any kind of artificial sweetener (that alone will get the pounds to start dropping) and do your best to feed yourself with healthy, whole foods that are locally sourced, seasonal and organic whenever possible.
It's not rocket science, it's just different.
